A fire tender ran off the road at De Kinderen, West Coast Demerara. Five firemen were injured. They are the driver, Section Leader Troy Gravesande, 45; Firemen Adrian Benjamin, 24; Quinton Damon, 36; Errol Hyman, 42; and Bryant Bobb, 20.
The crash occurred around 14:30 hrs yesterday. The tender PRR 1635 had just left the Leonora Fire Station heading to Parika, when it veered off the road and ran into a Day Care Centre under construction at De Kenderen, the police reported.
In a statement, police said, “The vehicle is extensively damaged and its occupants have been admitted patients at the West Demerara Regional Hospital nursing injuries about their bodies and are said to be in stable condition.
This publication later learnt, that tractor trailer GLL 3201/THH 5311 had run off the road also. The driver of motor lorry GLL 3201 owned by BK International said that he was heading to Parika when he suddenly noticed a fire engine overtaking him on the solid double line and heading to an approaching minibus.
In an attempt to avoid a collision, the tractor operator said that he took defensive action. He stepped on his brakes, which immediately locked up and the truck started skidding on the wet road surface.
The result is that he lost control and spun off the road and hit the utility pole.
He said that they did not stop to render assistance and they also did not have on any siren on at the time. The driver sustained no injuries.
