Delon Abrams, formerly of South Ruimveldt, Georgetown will go on trial from tomorrow for the murder of Police Corporal Detective Silburn Elias. The policeman was shot dead after entering a yard to recapture and escaped prisoner.
Abrams appeared yesterday before Justice Sandil Kissoon at the High Court in Georgetown.
Upon his arraignment, he pleaded not guilty to the charge which alleged that on January 6, 2014, he murdered Elias.
Presenting the case for the State are prosecutor Mandel Moore and Abigail Gibbs. The murder accused has retained Attorney-at-law Maxwell McKay.
The trial is expected to commence tomorrow.
According to the police, Abrams had been arrested by public-spirited persons on January 6, 2014 and handed over to the police after allegedly breaking into a house at Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, and stealing items.
From indication, Abrams was dealt a sound thrashing by residents since he had sustained injuries prior to being handed over to the police. As a result, he was escorted to the Georgetown Public Hospital by a constable, who was armed with his .38-calibre service revolver.
Police said that it was in the hospital compound that Abrams managed to overpower the policeman and take away his firearm before escaping.
Abrams was pursued by police ranks who caught up with him in a yard at Fourth Street, Alberttown, Georgetown. When police ranks including Elias cornered Abrams, he discharged several rounds.
Elias was shot twice—in the chest just below the left breast and in the left side of his abdomen.
