After two deadly prison riots in two years, including one ending in the destruction of Lot 12 Camp Street, security officials are under intense pressure to prevent similar tragedies.
After two deadly prison riots and the brazen smuggling of prohibited items, every Prison officer is now searched before entering the Camp Street jail. Here, a prison rank is subjected to a ‘pat down’ outside the prison gates.
And faced with the added burden of dealing with the smuggling of prohibited items, even Prison Officials are now under scrutiny.
Before entering the gates of the Camp Street Prison, junior and senior prison warders are subjected to searches by ranks of the Guyana Police Force.
Even Director of Prisons Gladwin Samuels is not exempt.
“I am subjected to the same search when I go into the prison, which is a detailed search,” he told the media recently.
Mr. Samuels also accepted that with all the new security measures in place, prisoners, sometimes with help from corrupt staff, are still finding ways to bring the contraband items in.
