One set of triplets and three sets of twins are currently enjoying the hospitality of staffers of the Maternity Wing of the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation [GPHC].
While the birth of twin babies has become rather common place, triplets continue to leave many in awe.
The latest triplets were born to a young couple, 25-year-old Guyana Defence Force Lance Corporal, Delroy George, and his common-law wife of three years, 26-year-old Mandisa McKinnon.
George, who shared his eagerness to commence fathering his three boys, revealed that he first learnt multiple babies were on the way back in 2017. He recalled accompanying his wife during the early stage of the pregnancy to do an ultrasound and was first informed that two babies were detected.
However, a subsequent ultrasound revealed there were three instead. “I was very excited because I wanted to become a father for a very long time and I’m a father of three now,” said a smiling George.
He added, “I am very prepared to be father. I trust in God and He will give me the strength so that I can be there for them. Since they were in their mother’s womb, I use to tell them, ‘Daddy will always be there for them and he will always love them’.”
The babies are yet to be named.
McKinnon gave birth to her three bundles of joy shortly before noon, Friday. Yesterday, she was still recuperating in the Maternity Ward but insisted that she felt strong as ever and ready to take on her mothering role.
Ready to lend support to the young couple is George’s mother, Ms. Melrose George. She revealed that while there have been family members who in the past gave birth to twins, this is the first time that she is aware of triplets being born into the family.
Making reference to her son, Melrose George said, “That is my oldest and I am very proud of him; I am proud of both of them. I am here to help them because I have taken care of other people’s children and I always keep saying bring all the grandchildren to me…so my first turned out to three at one time,” said an evidently ecstatic Melrose George.
Yesterday, Senior Minister of Public Health, Ms. Volda Lawrence, accompanied by several senior officials of the hospital visited the young couple to donate items to assist with the care of the newborns. Those visiting included Chief Executive Officer, Brigadier Retired George Lewis, Chairperson of the Board, Ms. Kesaundra Alves and Public Relations Officer, Ms. Mitzy Campbell.
Minister Lawrence during the visit yesterday also made contact, by way of telephone, with Minister of Social Protection, Ms. Amna Ally, who engaged the mother of the triplets in a conversation.
It is expected that Minister Lawrence with collaborate with her colleague Minister to provide even more support to the young couple with a view of helping to nurture their children in a wholesome environment.
Minister Lawrence and team also took some time to visit with the mothers of the newborn twins.
