An unemployed teenager who used a knife to inflict several stabs wounds on another resident walked out of the Berbice High Court a free man, recently.
Stephan Fordyce, called” Blacka”, 19, of Murphy Dam, Rosignol, West Bank Berbice, was on trial before Justice JoAnn Barlow and a mixed Jury. He was facing charges of attempted murder and wounding with intent to commit grievously bodily harm.
The victim was Richard Edwards, a fisherman, of 101 Rosignol ,West Bank Berbice. The incident occurred on April 17, 2017.
That day, the two men reportedly had a misunderstanding following a name calling incident. It was reported that later the same day, the men were in the vicinity of the Sweet Lips Disco when Fordyce walked up to Edwards and stabbed him repeatedly.
Edwards collapsed, was picked up and rushed to the New Amsterdam Hospital where he was admitted.
A report was made, and Fordyce was arrested the following day at home with the knife in his possession. He was subsequently charged.
In court, Edwards stated that he had known the accused for about two years prior. He said that he didn’t want to proceed with the story. I came here today to quash the matter and let it finish. I spoke to the defendant and his grandmother.”
He mentioned that he knew that after the matter is finished in court, he cannot go back to the police with the story.
Justice Barlow then ordered the jury to return a formal verdict of not guilty.
Before discharging the accused, Justice Barlow admonished him to stay out of trouble, because the next, he might not be so lucky and could end up in jail.
“The next time you see trouble approaching, run. You are a young man; I speak to you today not as a judge, but as a mother who has a son who would never be involved in such misdemeanors.”
Attorney-at-law Tuanna Hardy presented the state’s case while attorney Sasha Roberts of the Legal Aid Clinic represented Fordyce.
The Preliminary Inquiry was conducted before Magistrate Rondell Weaver and Prosecuted by Corporal Rochelle Mars in the Fort Wellington Magistrate’s Court where a prima facie was made out.
