A father and son are in custody in connection with the death of a 71-year-old man, who succumbed last Tuesday after being badly beaten at a La Retraite, West Bank Demerara wedding house.
Relatives said that the victim, Jerry Rambir, of Lot 18 Sisters Village, West Bank Demerara, was found on Goed Intent ‘Centre Dam’, West Bank Demerara last Monday morning.
He was admitted to the West Demerara Regional Hospital, but succumbed on Tuesday at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation where he was taken after his condition worsened.
A postmortem conducted yesterday showed that he had suffered blunt trauma to the head.
Police had detained the two suspects, known as ‘Screech’ and ‘Puck’ since Monday.
A senior police official said that investigators were told that Rambir had gotten into a scuffle with three men at the wedding house. He was reportedly struck to the head and upper body.
Ricky Rambir, the victim’s brother, said that the suspect known as ‘Screech’ came to his sibling’s house at around 21:30 hrs on Sunday. He said that the two men then left for the wedding house.
The brother said that at around 23:45 hrs, he received a call from a woman who said that someone had “lashed up” his sibling, who was lying in a pool of blood at Goed Intent.
However, when he arrived at the scene, the police had already taken his injured brother to the West Bank Demerara Regional Hospital.
The brother arrived at the hospital at around 01:10 hrs on Monday, and saw his sibling, whose head was heavily bandaged.
Kaieteur News understands that Rambir gave the names of two individuals who he said, “beat me bad.”
According to the brother, Rambir was also complaining of stomach pains and an ultrasound was ordered.
The brother said that he left, and when he returned, was informed that Rambir had been transferred to the GPHC.
He arrived there at around 03:30 hrs where hospital staff informed him that his brother was being prepared for surgery.
When the brother again visited on Tuesday, he was informed that Rambir was on life support. The pensioner died later that day.
Charges are likely next week.
