The newly commissioned facility, which houses the Oncology Unit at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, (GPHC), is set to boost the work of the Institute of Health Science Education (IHSE).
The IHSE opened in 2006 to serve the educational functions of the hospital by offering postgraduate training to medical professionals including doctors and nurses.
The post-graduate programmes entail comprehensive advanced training in a number of specialised areas. The institute has produced at least 70 graduates, certified in various fields of medicine. The certificates offered by the Institute are accredited by the University of Guyana.
According to Manager of the Institute, Darshanand Rampersaud, IHSE is designed to produce the core of healthcare providers needed to ensure quality healthcare across all regions and communities in Guyana.
“Basically, the Institute of Health Sciences Education under Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) specializes in postgraduate training.”
At present, IHSE has 11 programmes including a Masters in Medicine surgery; Masters in Medicine and Orthopedic surgery; a Masters in Paediatrics; Masters in Family Medicine; Masters in Anesthesia and Intensive Care; Masters in Diagnostic Radiology.
Rampersaud noted that the programmes specifically target persons who have completed their medical degrees and have some level of hospital training.
“Every year, we take in a suitable number of applicants for each programme and they are trained in their area of specialty.
“Upon completion of a programme, the graduates are conferred with certificates accredited by the University of Guyana.”
Over the past decade, the work of the institute has expanded significantly.
Rampersaud explained, “When the institute started in 2006, it offered only one programme, the Post Graduate Surgical Programme and now we have 11 Postgraduate programmes for doctors and three specialized programmes for nurses.”
He explained that the programmes are facilitated by senior medical staff attached to GPHC and other overseas-based Universities.
“We foster collaboration worldwide, from North America and the Caribbean. We sometimes have lecturers from McMaster University in Canada, University of Ohio and the University of Pittsburg in the United States.”
Additionally, he explained that although the programmes consist of classroom sessions, teaching is not limited to the classroom—“knowledge is also shared during bedside visits and in the operations room.”
“It all depends on the programme. Key emphasis is however placed on the practical aspect,” Rampersaud added.
At present, the IHSE located at the upper flat of the building accommodates 140 Postgraduate students from GPHC and other medical institutions.
Rampersaud explained that in the past, space was always an issue for the Institute.
“We didn’t have ample space. We used to work around it but it was always an impediment for us in terms of delivering to optimal levels. With this building that issue has been reduced tremendously,” he added.
At the commissioning of the facility last week, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of GHPC, Brigadier (ret’d) George Lewis, highlighted the need for utilising the facilities to improve the quality of service offered by the hospital.
“Together, the new and improved facilities for Institute of Health Science Education and the Oncology Department will better enable us to achieve our mission of providing efficient healthcare services in an equitable manner and promoting teaching and research here at the Georgetown Public Hospital,” Lewis remarked.
The upper flat of the 30 feet by 60 feet building functions as the IHSE, while the lower flat is used as the Oncology Department.
The teaching facilities that are provided include equipment for online training, an online library, two offices and two classrooms, which can host approximately 50 students.
