Residents of the Orealla and Siparuta Communities in Region Six, last week expressed their delight when they were afforded the opportunity to meet with representatives of the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions last week.
A four-member team from the DPP Office on June 27, last, travelled to the riverine communities to hold a Public Outreach which focused on sensitizing residents to the role and functions of the DPP’s Office in the Criminal Justice System.
The meeting at Orealla was held at the Orealla Benab on June 28.
“This is good, very, very good what you have done here today to meet with us. Not very often do we have meetings like this where we can sit and talk face to face with officials,” one resident proclaimed.
Assistant DPP, Diana O’Brien, who sits on the Ministry of National Security Task Force Committee for Human Trafficking, took the opportunity to speak on the issue of Trafficking in Persons (TlP) and its indicators.
The ADPP and Legal Assistant Abbas Hamid also spoke on the various offences under the Sexual Offences (Amendment) Act. Of concern to residents was the issue of teenage pregnancy in both communities.
The team also visited the Orealla Secondary School and the Siparuta Primary School where the students also learnt about the works of the DPP Office.
In addition to talks, the team also distributed TIP Posters, Pamphlets and the DPP’s Chambers Information Booklet.
The objective of the Outreach was to meet with residents and to listen to their complaints with respect to legal matters.
