The police in Berbice have confirmed that three persons have been arrested in connection with missing vouchers from the Regional Education Officer’s office in New Amsterdam, Berbice.
Regional officials who made the announcement at Region Six monthly statutory meeting has since condemned the act.
They have assured that the persons involved will be made an example.
Zamal Hussain, PPP Councillor, said that the vouchers were in an envelope on the REDO’s desk in her office when the sweeper/cleaner, while carrying out her duties allegedly stole the envelope containing the vouchers worth $120,000.
The vouchers are normally distributed throughout all schools in the country to assist parents and guardians acquire school clothing, supplies etc.
What was allegedly stolen was set aside for the Baracara Primary School. The head teacher of the Albion Back Nursery School is also accused of being in collusion with the person that allegedly stole the vouchers. She reportedly stamped the stolen vouchers.
The councillor stated that the discovery was made some time last week when the head teacher for Baracara Primary visited the office to uplift the vouchers.
According to Hussain, “The vouchers for Baracara school which were not issued as yet was kept in an envelope on the desk and it was allegedly stolen by the sweeper/cleaner. The security guard is also allegedly involved since she was also in receipt of some of these vouchers.”
However, Kaieteur News was told that the head teacher of Albion Back Nursery is claiming that the stamp was stolen before the vouchers went missing.
Weighing in on the issue was the Regional Chairman, David Armogan, who stressed that what took place is “very serious”.
He said that the matter was only brought to the attention of the RDC at yesterday’s meeting, but was lamented that the Education Department in Region Six should take some responsibility also for what happened.
Armogan said, “Those things should be properly secured by the REDO or someone in authority. The fact that a sweeper/cleaner can get such access and take vouchers worth $120,000 tells me that these things are not properly secured. This is gross carelessness and so in the future we have to be more careful and safeguard it properly.”
