Incumbent Chairman of the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR), Basil Williams, is seeking to debate contenders for the position Joseph Harmon and Volda Lawrence.
Williams told reporters yesterday that the contenders must tell the membership about their plans should they be elected at Congress in August 2018.
“What I would want, though, is that the members of the PNC would be afforded the opportunity to hear a debate from all the candidates. That is what I will propose for sure,” Williams stated.
He stated that he has a proven track record of working for the party and the community, citing court cases such as the Mark Benschop trial which he undertook for free.
“The PNC people and PNC members are very sensible people. They have proven that over the years. I wouldn’t insult my people to say I am going to win again or not. I am saying they are sensible and bright. I have a track record. Who wants to challenge me must show their track record of achievements for the PNC,” Williams noted.
Williams was elected unopposed at the party’s Congress in 2016, but this year, Harmon has already noted that any member can aspire to the highest office in the party. Lawrence has been a long-standing senior member of the party and has been ambitious in climbing higher up in the party.
In 2012, she had contested the post of leader against David Granger and Carl Greenidge.
According to Harmon, the party is an extremely democratic one, which means that biannually they hold a Congress at which all positions of leadership are voted for, and that is from Leader right up to the Central Executive members.
Williams appeared to suggest that the current leadership should not been challenged after taking the party to victory at the 2015 General Elections following 23 years of rule by the People’s Progressive Party (PPP).
“Don’t forget the current executive is the one that took us into office and if we were good enough after 23 years to take us into Government. Why after three years when we are ready now to look at re-election you want to change the team? You don’t change a winning team. We learned that in cricket and the Americans would say if it is not broke why fix it,” Williams said.
