A $22M new nursery school was yesterday commissioned at Diamond, East Bank Demerara, the second in the community, but in a few months’ time the building has to be expanded again to take more students.
The disclosures would indicate the rising problems facing communities across the country, especially new housing schemes where populations have been expanding, putting schools, both public and privately-run, under pressure.
Yesterday, the Diamond No. 2 Nursery School, located in 5th Avenue, Diamond Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara was commissioned, with officials disclosing that it was built to address the need for an additional nursery school.
This is according to Assistant Chief Education Officer (Nursery) (ag), Ms. Samantha Williams.
She said that the Regional Administration of Region Four found it necessary to have consultations and a feasibility study done concerning the construction of the school.
The construction of the school totaled $22M and was built with the dimensions 30ft x 90ft, to accommodate 120 learners. It was opened last September and has seven teachers now.
Delivering remarks on behalf of the Minister of Education, Nicolette Henry, Williams also said that the government is committed to the renaissance of education in Guyana.
She said that new modern facilities improve not only the school’s physical environment, but also contribute to a learning culture where imagination is set free.
Chairwoman of the Regional Democratic Council, Region Four, Genevieve Allen, stressed the point that every student has the potential to succeed at the highest level. She charged teachers and parents to work with their children and promote values in education.
She disclosed that since 2013, it was recognized that there was a growing need for more school space in the Diamond/Grove communities, said to be one of the biggest housing schemes in the country.
Parents were flocking the Region Four education office, pleading for placements of their children. The region, which includes the capital city, is fighting hard to maintain the 58 nursery schools under its watch.
She said that money has been allocated and an extension of the nursery school is set to begin in August.
She lauded the New Diamond/Grove Primary School for its excellent performance at the National Grade Six Assessment – one of its students placed fourth.
According to Allen, education development is a priority for the region at the nursery, primary, secondary and at the Practical Instruction Centre levels.
During the commissioning ceremony, those in attendance were treated to cultural items performed by the students of the school and the Diamond Secondary School Steel Pan Orchestra.
