Magistrate Faith McGusty yesterday sentenced a 22-year-old man to 10 years imprisonment following his conviction on two robbery under arms charges.
Nicholas Smith was on trial in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
On February 11, last, on Seawall Road, Kingston, while being in the company of others and armed with a gun, he robbed Dexter David of a gold chain valued $60,000, and a phone valued $62,000.
On the same day in question and at the same location, while being in company of others and armed with a gun, he robbed Kevin Ramlall of a gold chain valued $60,000 and a phone valued $70,000.
Yesterday Magistrate McGusty ruled that there was sufficient evidence against Smith for the crimes committed, hence she imposed the custodial sentence.
The matter was prosecuted by Police Prosecutor, Sean Blackman, who called four witnesses to testify in the matter. The witnesses’ evidence was not discredited, the Magistrate said.
According to information, on the day in question the victims were walking along the Seawall Road when they were approached by Smith who was armed with a gun and in the company of two others. It was reported that Smith placed a gun to the head of one of the victims, and demanded that both of them hand over their valuables.
He then made good his escape with the aforementioned articles. A report was then made at the Alberttown Police Station.
An investigation was carried out and Smith was arrested for the offence. A confrontation was then conducted between him and the victims, and he was positively identified as one of the perpetrators.
Magistrate McGusty sentenced Smith to five years on each charge and the sentences will run consecutively.
