The drivers of two minibuses which were involved in an accident last week Thursday on Den Amstel Public Road, West Coast Demerara, and resulted in the deaths of two brothers, will be charged with causing death by dangerous driving. This is according to a statement from the Guyana Police Force (GPF).
The drivers, Mohendra Rambowar 31, of 1621 Tuschen Housing Scheme, East Bank Essequibo and Devon Headley 27, of 793 Tuschen Housing Scheme, East Bank Essequibo, are presently out on station bail.
They will appear in the Vreed-en-Hoop Magistrate’s Court today.
The brothers, Sherman West, 28, a labourer and Shalum Allen, 19, both of Lots 8-9 Fellowship, West Coast Demerara, were killed after being run over by a mini-bus while cycling on the Den Amstel Public Road.
According to a police release, the driver of mini bus BVV 8882, who was proceeding east along the northern side of the road, stopped to put off passengers, while West, who was towing Allen on a bicycle, was proceeding in the same direction behind the bus.
West was about to pass the bus when the vehicle suddenly moved off and struck the bicycle’s handlebar.
The brothers fell onto the southern carriageway of the road and were struck by mini bus BVV 7042 which was proceeding in the opposite direction. They were rushed to the West Demerara Regional Hospital in an unconscious state by the police, but were pronounced dead on arrival. The drivers were breathalyzed, but no alcohol was detected.
The brothers were laid to rest on Tuesday.
