DEAR EDITOR,
I agree with Anu Bihari on the rebuilding of the La Penitence Municipal Market (Letter in your newspaper issue of June 30, 2018 – La Penitence Market should be torn down and a new facility built in its place). In fact, the reconstruction of that facility is part of a wider plan to lift standards in Georgetown and to provide suitable accommodation [a roof over the head of all of our vendors] for vendors and others, who are desirous of doing business in the city.
Other features of the Municipal Market Development Plan include extending the northern side of Stabroek Market, the construction of a multi complex at the New Vendors Mall, and a Mall with special parking facilities at Bourda Green, and the redesigning of the East Ruimveldt Market.
Again, restorative works are in progress at the Kitty Market and we hope to be able to begin allotting those stalls that have already been completed soon.
However, our desire and plan are not adequately complemented by our narrow revenue base. That, notwithstanding, we are trying different approaches, including talking with our banks and our international partners and sister cities for assistance and support with this plan.
Yours faithfully
Royston King
Town Clerk
City of Georgetown
