Officials from the Childcare and Protection Agency are trying to locate the mother of a 13-year-old girl who allegedly trafficked the teen in a popular interior location.
The girl was taken into the custody of the Childcare Agency yesterday. She is being interviewed and is to be medically examined.
Kaieteur News understands that a “concerned resident” tipped off officials about the child’s plight.
It is alleged that the mother, who is an alcoholic, collected money from soliciting her daughter mainly to drivers who ply the interior location where the family resides.
“We have to notify the Trafficking in Persons officials so that they can investigate,” a source said, adding that the mother will be charged if the allegations against her are proven.
In 2016, Government identified 98 trafficking victim cases. Eighty were for prostitution and 18 for labour trafficking.
A recent United States State Department Trafficking in Persons (TIP) Report indicated that Guyana now fully meets the minimum standards for combating trafficking in persons.
The government has also approved the 2017-2018 national plan to combat trafficking in persons; established an anti-trafficking unit, increased the number of prosecutions; and are assisting more victims.
