Kidnapping and murder accused, Sheldon Chase, an inmate at the Camp Street Prison died on Saturday evening at the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he had been undergoing dialysis for quite some time.
Kaieteur News understands that Chase’s failing health had led to his constant hospitalization and inability to attend court on several occasions.
Chase, believed to be 32, and formerly of Pike Street, Kitty, Georgetown has been incarcerated since 2014, when he along with four others were charged with the kidnapping of Enmore businessman, Rajendra Singh, who was later murdered in the Le Repentir Cemetery.
The five men were first charged with kidnapping the businessman. Subsequently, a murder charge was instituted against them after Singh was found dead with a bullet wound to the head in an isolated part of the cemetery.
His killers had used a jersey to tie his mouth and nose. The killers then proceeded to stuff him in an alcove created by some fallen trees. They had removed his pants, leaving him clad in his socks and his underwear. His hands were bound with what appeared to be his belt.
The murder charge against the men stated that they murdered Singh between April 5, 2014 and April 9, 2014, at Le Repentir Cemetery.
Following a preliminary inquiry in July 2017, Chase was cleared of the kidnapping charge, his co-accused were committed to stand trial for the indictable offence.
Singh, a spare parts auto dealer was kidnapped by two gunmen on April 5, 2014 at his Foulis, East Coast Demerara business place.
His car was found abandoned in Goedverwagting, East Coast Demerara by his wife. The kidnappers had initially demanded $50M from the family, but reduced it to $25M. The ransom was never paid.
