Curtis Dey, a Trojan Cycle Club (TCC) member is the new Guyana Cycling Federation (GCF) Road Race champion, out-smarting an experienced field to claim the most prestigious event on the cycling calendar, yesterday.
The grueling 110 mile contest which commenced at 07:30hrs outside the National Sports Commission (NSC) building on Homestretch Avenue and followed a journey that led the 22 cyclists up to the Linden Soesdyke Highway before heading back to the city, ended with Dey, who would be celebrating his 19th birthday on September 10th, next, powering to the finish line in Four Hours 51 Minutes 37.25 Seconds (4’ 51″ 37.25).
In what may be a first in history of the sport, the 2nd and 3rd place positions were also filled by cyclists from Corentyne, Berbice; Andrew Hicks (United We Stand Cycle Club) and Romello Crawford (PSL T&T). Paul De Nobrega ended fourth and Jamal John, fifth.
Commenting on the race, Dey said the feeling to be national senior champion is great noting that he rode a smart race.
”I rode this race with sense to save my legs whilst watching the bigger guys during the battle and waited for the right time to make my move. We did unnecessary work but the main thing is that we recovered.”
The always bubbly Dey also shared that the weather was not that bad which allowed for encouraging recovery.
”Thank God for no mechanical issues, it was a good race. The start was a brutal start because we did not have any time to warm up, touching down and getting to the starting line. At the middle point of the race we did unnecessary work as went a further four miles.”
On the return journey, there were many attacks as riders were intent on establishing a break but that was not allowed.
”I had to use my head and focus until the sprint and I won the race. The win means that I have a brighter future and would take it more serious now. I am looking forward to some overseas competition including the senior Caribbean championships.”
Championship jerseys to the respective Road Race winners along with gold, silver and bronze medals were presented to the top three finishers for both the Road Race and Individual Time Trials.
Recipients of prizes yesterday with GCF officials Hassan Mohamed (6th left) and Joseph Britton (back row left). Cyclists in pic from left are Andrew Hicks, Raynauth Jeffrey, David Hicks, Romello Crawford, Curtis Dey, Briton John, Warren Mc Kay, Shameer Baksh and Jaikarran Sookhai.
