Two Corentyne men, Parshram Guman, called “Naresh”, and Mahesh Lackhan called, Govindra, of Williamsburg, Corentyne, Berbice, have been found guilty of the crime.
They are on trial before Justice Brassington Reynolds and a mixed Jury in the Berbice High Court. A probation report has been ordered.
They are accused of engaging in sexual penetration of a 23-year-old man without his consent during a drinking spree back in 2015 on the Corentyne.
.The state’s case is being presented by Attorney-at-law Tuanna Hardy.
The two accused are being represented by Attorney-at-law Rodwell Jugmohan.
According to evidence led in court, the men knew each other for some time. The virtual complainant worked with one of the accused. On the day in question, the two accused, the virtual complainant and another man were drinking together when the virtual complainant began feeling dizzy.
Guman then took off his belt and pulled off his pants. The men then took turn in raping him. During the ordeal, the victim lost consciousness.
He was at home the next day when he was called by one of his assailants who asked him if he was feeling good to go to work. The man then told him that he was sodomised. The victim then checked his anus and found blood.
The matter was reported. The victim was taken to the hospital where he was medically examined and confirmed that he was raped.
The accused were subsequently arrested and charged.
The state called seven witnesses including three police ranks and the victim.
The prosecution and defence closed their case and made their summation to the jury. Justice Reynolds then took time to go over the evidence to the jury and directed them on the points of law before the jury retired to consider the evidence.
They then returned with the verdict of guilty of rape.
The probation report is expected to be presented on July 9, when the two accused are expected to be sentenced.
