The Marian Academy will be hosting another of its chess competition tomorrow from 09:00hrs – 15:00hrs at the school’s auditorium. Over six years now the school has been successfully implementing the Chess in School Initiative as an extra – curriculum activity in both the Primary and Secondary Departments.
The Chess in School Initiative is a worldwide initiative being implemented in school systems where chess is used as a sport and a tool to improve student’s performance academically. Guyana, through the National Sports Commission (NSC), this year has been implementing the programmes nationwide.
With over 80 registered students, this tournament is expected to be yet another big event for the students of this club between, ranging between ages 7-16, years. Top players the likes of Ethan Lee and Sasha Shariff are expected to participate.
Lee, who is ranked # 4 among Guyana’s top juniors, recently won the St. Stanislaus College Open – Chess Competition and Sasha was recently elected to represent Guyana at this year’s World Chess Championships scheduled to be held in Batumi, Georgia.
Both players also played in this year Carifta Chess Championships that was held in Paramaribo Suriname last March and has been having a good year, so they are tournament favourites and will be expected to perform greatly.
Eyes will be on Roshawn Washington and Dwayne Bess who also participated in this year’s National Junior Chess Championships.
