After more than a decade later, the main public roads on the small Island of Wakenaam continues to rapidly deteriorate.
A section of the main road which stretches almost two miles across the island, is filled with huge potholes and this has been so for a number of years now. Though the island has a small population of approximately 3,500 residents, its main road is integral for transportation throughout the island.
As was revealed by the Wakenaam NDC chairman, Mr. Sheikhabad, the Public roads on the island of Wakenaam have been an issue for over the past 10 years.
“The government has been doing works on the road, but there has been no proper maintenance programme. The original structure of the road was not even good for over the past 25 years.”
According to reports, the road was further destroyed by a contractor who had been executing works on the Island. The Island of Wakenaam is predominantly a farming community, hence the internal roads were built to facilitate light vehicle and traffic.
It was reported, however, that the contractor who recently worked on the Island would usually haul huge boulders across the island using heavy duty trucks. As was indicated by the NDC chairman, the boulders caused major damages when dragged on the road surface.
He added, “The contractor had these eight-wheel trucks pulling boulders from one part of the island to the other part on the road. That caused the Noitgedacht to San Souci area to be damaged even more.”
It was revealed by an RDC councilor, Perry Bearal, that the construction of an asphalted public road for the island, has been budgeted for this year. Councilor Bearal added, “Minister Patterson budgeted for the road on Wakenaam, the area from Noitgedacht to Success to Sarah.
“We are now waiting on information for the asphalt plant to come to Wakenaam because the Asphalt plant is in another area working.”
In the meantime, the NDC is calling on the Government to dispatch a maintenance crew to the Island to commence immediate repair to the already deteriorated road.
