Andrew Doris, 47, of 972 Kaneville, East Bank Demerara, sustained three gunshot wounds after an altercation with his tenants, Melanie McGarrell and Arif Abdool.
Mrs. Yolandie Doris who witnessed the shooting, said that the troubles with the tenants began some three month ago, when she started to receive complaints from neighbours about the loud, vulgar music and marijuana smoking.
Mrs Doris who lives in a wooden house at the back of the house where the incident happened, had issued a notice to quit to McGarrell on April 12, 2018, which stated,” Dear Ms. Melanie McGarrell, “Notice of Removal”: This serves to inform you that a notice of removal from the premises of your landlord Andrew Doris by July, 2018.
“The landlord cannot tolerate any longer the smoking of marijuana, the abusive behaviour, noise nuisance of your preference of intolerable music and misuse of the landlord property. With all this in mind the contracted agreement have been broken. So this letter serves you.” And the document was signed Andrew Doris.
Mrs Doris said that after the issuance of the letter to McGarrell, she became very abusive. She said she was not going to pay anymore rent until she was ready to move. (Mr. and Mrs. Doris) agreed and told the tenant that they only wanted their apartment vacated.
Mrs Doris claimed that it has been three months of hell, with many reports to the Grove Police Station not bringing any peace, since the police have not been to her premises once since.
Yesterday morning proved that the tenants were not of good character as Mrs. Doris had warned her husband on several occasions.
Mrs Doris said that she and her husband went to tell the tenants that the time was up for them to move, and that they wanted the light bills, since they had not paid the bills and the lights had been cut. This was about 8:30 hours.
Mrs Doris said while her husband was talking to McGarell at her apartment door, Abdool attempted to close the door.
Her husband held the knob at the time and prevented the closure.
The woman said that Abdool went back into the house and returned with a gun. He discharged five shots at Andrew Doris, who ran in the northern direction in the yard. Mrs Doris said that she ran in the southern direction towards the gate.
When she looked back, her husband was lying on the ground and moaning.
Mrs Doris said she ran for a car to take her husband to the hospital. She said that when she returned and was giving the car directions to pick-up her husband, Abdool was heading out on a bicycle with a blue hard jacket and the gun in his waist. He then told her that he was going to kill her next and burn her house down.
Mrs Doris said she took her husband to Diamond Hospital. She returned home and she saw some spent shells on the ground. She then picked up two, which she later gave to the police.
When the police came they found a few more spent shells, they took away the suspects wife, to assist with investigations.
Mrs Doris said her husband was shot three times, once in his right femur, another bullet passed through the leg, and one punctured the crotch area.
Andrew Doris is now at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation.
