Seventy of Berbice most promising batsmen on Sunday last attended a Batting Clinic organised by the Berbice Cricket Board as part of its countywide Dr. Tulsi Dyal Singh Coaching Programme. The Clinic was the last of four to be organised by the Berbice Cricket Board as part of the programme and followed those organised for wicketkeepers, fast bowlers and spinners.
Level III Coach Winston Smith conducted the One-day Clinic with assistance from Coach Andre Percival and Pre-Level One Coach Lakeram Latchman. The session was extended late into the afternoon as the youths sought to put into practise what they were taught. The youths drawn from Clubs like Achievers, Blairmont, Tucber Park, Rose Hall Canje, Albion, Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club, Port Mourant, Kendall’s Union and No. 73 took full advantage of the Clinic and called on the Berbice Cricket Board to organise similar programmes in the future.
The Coaches worked with the batsmen on a wide range of areas including Mental Management, Sequence of balance and Sequence of bat swing. Special attention was placed on the grip, stance, set up and movement execution. Coach Smith stated that he was very impressed with the vast amount of batting talents in the county and the interest displayed throughout the Clinic.
Among those in attendance were Berbice players Alex Algoo, Kevin Sinclair, Junior Sinclair, Kevlon Anderson, Zeymul and Abdul Ramsammy, Javed Karim, Seon Glasgow, Leon Swammy, Jonathan Rampersaud, Garfield Benjamin and Rampersaud Rampertab. President of the Berbice Cricket Board, Hilbert Foster, who was present at all of the Clinics, stated that the main objective is to make sure that every potential in Berbice is fulfilled. Berbice, he stated was a profilic producer of outstanding youth cricketers in the past like Mahendra Nagamootoo, Vishal Nagamootoo, David Fingal, Damodar Dasrat, Narsingh Deonarine, Sewnarine Chattergoon and it is his hope that the next generation of players can upkeep the rich tradition.
The President also disclosed that the Berbice Cricket Board has been able to obtain financial sponsorship to start early preparation for the 2019 Inter-county Season. With sponsorship from an overseas based Berbician, the Berbice Cricket Board would host monthly preparation sessions for its Under-15, Under-17, Under-19 Male, Under-19 Female and Female Senior players. The Coaches would select a combined squad of seventy players, who would undergo intense training and coaching over the next seven months starting next month. Players would be added to the training squad as they perform in the different tournaments organised by the Berbice Cricket Board. Foster announced that attendance at these sessions shall be compulsory as the Berbice Cricket Board has adopted a no-nonsense attitude towards players with a laid back attitude. Foster noted with pride that never in the history of Guyana, has a County Board had such a comprehensive Coaching Programme and that the Berbice Cricket Board is determined to make sure that its finances is properly spent.
