A member of the Guyana Defence Force Coast Guard, who allegedly struck and killed a man while driving, was yesterday charged for causing death, and being over the legal limit of alcohol at the time of the incident.
Eson Trim, 28, of ‘K’ 44 Guyhoc Gardens, South Ruimveldt, appeared before Magistrate Christel Lambert in the Leonora Magistrate’s Court.
The first allegation against Trim stated that on June 17 at De Willem Village, West Coast Demerara, he drove motor vehicle PWW 5680 in a manner dangerous to the public, causing the death of Roopchand Ramkellawan.
It was further alleged that on the same day and at the same location, he drove the same vehicle while his breath alcohol level was above the legal limit.
Trim denied both allegations after they were read to him by the Magistrate.
The man was represented by Attorney-at-Law Latchmie Rahamat, who, in an application to secure bail, told the court that CCTV footage would show Ramkellawan walking into the path of her client’s vehicle.
Trim was released on $310,000 bail on the two offences. He was instructed to make his next court appearance on July 24.
According to reports, Ramkellawan, who is the younger brother of Chutney Singer Mahendra Ramkellawan, was struck down as he was attempting to cross the road.
A police report stated that Ramkellawan was crossing from the southern side of the road to the northern side when the vehicle, which was heading in an easterly direction on the De Willem Public Road, came into contact with him.
A badly injured Ramkellawan was taken to the Leonora Cottage Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Reports also stated that a .32, unlicensed pistol with four live rounds were found on him.
