A 58-year-old woman who the court heard was on the police radar for quite some time, yesterday made an appearance in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts and was remanded, for allegedly trafficking five pounds of ganja and three pounds of cocaine.
Roxanne Carrington, of 63 Old Road, Housing Scheme, Bartica, appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan.
She denied the allegation that on June 23 at the aforementioned address, she had in her possession 2,555 grams of marijuana and 1,451 grams of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking.
The woman’s attorney, Latchmie Rahamat, in an application to secure bail for her client, told the court that Carrington would normally permit persons to rent two rooms in her home since she lives alone.
She added that at the time of the search, two persons by the name of Becky Mohan and Royston Smith were renting the rooms.
The lawyer argued that the alleged narcotics were not found in her client’s possession, and she has no knowledge of the illegal substance, hence she should be released on reasonable bail.
However, facts presented by Police Prosecutor Gordon Mansfield differed from that account. He told the court that police, acting on intelligence, swooped down on Carrington’s home and conducted a search on the three-bedroom property.
He added that several taped parcels containing a quantity of leaves, seeds and stems were concealed inside a box and a bucket inside her room, while the substance believed to be cocaine was found in another room.
The court heard that the search was carried out in Carrington’s presence and when the allegation was put to her, she told the police that one Royston Smith had given her the drugs to keep. She was then arrested and taken into custody.
Magistrate McLennan after listening to the prosecutor’s submission told the court that no special reason was outlined by the defence attorney, hence, Carrington was remanded. She was instructed to make her next court appearance on July 12 at the Bartica Magistrate’s Court.
