The 62-year-old man who police were on the hunt for after he attempted to murder his ex-wife and subsequently burnt her house down, was yesterday found hanging from a tree in Rose Hall Town.
Dead is Lionel Thomas, he was at about 06:30 hrs yesterday discovered hanging from a rope on a “dunks tree” in his farm at Rose Hall Town, Corentyne, by a passer-by.
Thomas injured his ex-wife, Omawattie Alvin, 47 and her seven months pregnant 17-year-old daughter Leana Thomas of 192 Area R Babu Jaan, Port Mourant, Berbice, last Thursday.
Thomas had ventured to Alvin’s home and began arguing with her. He subsequently grabbed her and the two ended up in a scuffle, when Thomas pulled out a knife and attempted to stab her.
Alvin’s daughter who was in the upper flat of the two-storey building heard the commotion downstairs and retreated, in an attempt to save her mother she intervened but was hit in the head with a champagne bottle by her father. The two women managed to escape from Thomas and he subsequently ran into the nearby bushes.
Omawattie Alvin revealed that she made a report on the said day of the attack and was advised by the police to not return home. Alvin disclosed that she moved to a close relative’s house and shortly after she received a call that her house was on fire. When she arrived at the scene Wednesday night, the house was already engulfed in flames and nothing could be saved.
The woman is nursing several injuries about her body, as is her pregnant daughter.
