A 37-year-old taxi driver who allegedly took a minor behind the Marriott Hotel and raped her was yesterday charged and released on $150,000 bail by a City Magistrate.
Subbashand Harichand, of 91 New Road, Vreed-en-Hoop, West Coast Demerara, appeared before Principal Magistrate Judy Latchman in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
The unrepresented man was not required to plead to the charge, which alleged that between December 1 and December 31, 2017, at Georgetown Seawall, he engaged in sexual penetration with a child under the age of sixteen. The matter was held in camera.
According to information, the taxi driver was hired by the child’s mother to take her to and from school.
The defendant would normally pick up the minor from school and carry her at the back of Marriott Hotel where they would normally spend time kissing.
It was between the periods mentioned in the charge that the defendant picked up the minor from school and had sex with her in the back seat of the vehicle.
Information received stated that the child’s mother went into her room and discovered that her daughter had lost her virginity on December 10, last, as a result of certain markings on a calendar.
It was thereafter the child was questioned and she told her mother that she and the taxi driver had sex.
The mother then went and reported the matter to the police station. An investigation was then carried out and Harichand was arrested and charged for the offence.
The father of two was instructed to make his next court appearance on July 5.
