A man who told the court that he jokingly stole a man’s phone from his vehicle was yesterday sentenced to 18 months’ imprisonment by Principal Magistrate Judy Latchman.
Twenty-two-year-old Kevin Christopher admitted to the charge which alleged that on June 22, last, at Sussex Street, Charlestown, Georgetown, he stole one Samsung phone valued $75,000, property of Alan Campbell.
Christopher in his explanation to the court stated, “Madam, is joke I been mekking when I tek the phone. He wife see when I pick up the phone and she ain’t say anything. I give my uncle the phone to keep.”
The man who appeared to be unremorseful added, “My father in jail when he come out, he gone deal with them police who beat me. I tek the stupid phone to sell it fuh buy milk for my two children.”
Police Prosecutor, Shawn Gonsalves, stated that on June 2, at Sussex Street, Charlestown, the victim parked his car and went to conduct business.
The court heard that on his return, the victim observed his phone missing; he went and reported the matter to the station.
An investigation was launched and the defendant was arrested. Under caution, he replied, “Officer don’t beat me, I gon carry you where the phone deh.”
Magistrate Latchman before sentencing Christopher told him that he should not steal and that he should work hard for what he wants.
She added, “Do not let this continue into the next generation of your family. Your father is in jail and you’re going to jail. You must teach your children the right thing. This has to stop.”
Magistrate Latchman went on tell Christopher that based on the prevalence of the offence and the need to prohibit others from contemplating similar offences, she imposed the custodial sentence on him.
