The Berbice Cricket Board on Saturday last hosted a highly successful Coaching Clinic for young spinners as part of the countywide Dr. Tulsi Dyal Singh Coaching Programme. A massive turnout of 56 spinners drawn from across Berbice attended the One-day Clinic which was conducted by Level III Cricket Coach Winston Smith.
Berbice Cricket Board President Hilbert Foster, who is spearheading the widespread coaching project, stated that the Board had catered for about 30 spinners and was shocked at the large turnout. This, he proudly stated is an indication that Berbicians once again have confidence in the operations of the Berbice Cricket Board. The offspinner clinic followed two days programmes in Upper Corentyne and Lower Corentyne along with a One-day Clinic for Wicketkeepers and Fast Bowlers. Twenty wicketkeepers and thirty six fast bowlers attended the two clinics respectively. The programme would close off with a batting clinic and Two-day Sessions in New Amsterdam and West Berbice. Foster, in brief remarks to the fifty six young spinners, pleaded with them to take advantage of opportunities given to them. The Berbice Cricket Board, he stated is unmatched across the Caribbean for its investment into the development of its youth players and this would continue as long as he remains President of the Berbice Cricket Board.
Foster, stated that the clinics were also part of the Berbice Cricket Board early planning for the Guyana Cricket Board junior Inter-county season at the Under-15, Under-17 and Under-19 Male and Female levels. The Berbice Cricket Board would use the next six months to prepare the best and strongest team at each level with the major objective of winning every tournament.
Head Coach Winston Smith stated that he concentrated on finger and wrist spin and work was done on bowling over the top, side spin, back spin, run-up, grip, release, follow through and target bowling among others. Smith disclosed that he was able to identify at least twenty four youths with good potential to become the next Devendra Bishoo, Mahendra Nagamootoo or Veerasammy Permaul. Smith expressed gratitude to the Clubs who are working along with the Berbice Cricket Board by sending their best players to the Clinic. The Clubs include Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club, Albion, Port Mourant, Rose Hall Canje, Upper Corentyne, Kendall’s Union, Blairmont, Tucber Park and No. 73.
The Berbice Cricket Board would like to express gratitude to Dr. Tulsi Dyal Singh for his sponsorship of the programme, which is assisting the Berbice Cricket Board to unearth new talents across Berbice. Among the spinners at the Clinic were Kevin Sinclair, Karran Arjpaul, Keith Simpson, Seon Glasgow, Jonathan Rampersaud and Jeremy Sandia.
