Newly elected President of the Berbice Cricket Board Hilbert Foster accompanied by Berbice Cricket Board Secretary Rabindranauth Saywack hosted a highly successful Pre-season Meeting with First Division Clubs. The Meeting was held at the Albion Community Centre and was attended by nine of the eleven Clubs. Those in attendance were Upper Corentyne, Skeldon, Port Mourant, Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club, Albion, Rose Hall Canje, Tucber Park, Police and Blairmont. Young Warriors Cricket Club and West Berbice were absent without an official excuse.
The Berbice Cricket Board President in Opening Remarks, stated that the First Division Season would start as soon as the rainy season ceases and Clubs are able to get their grounds in order. The first season at the moment would consist of a Double Wicket Tournament along with 20/20, 40-Overs and 50-Overs Tournaments. The Berbice Cricket Board at the request from a Representative of the Albion Cricket Club promised to look into the possibility of hosting a Two-Days Inter-Club Tournament. Foster stated that the Berbice Cricket Board intends to strengthen the First Division level and to make it very competitive. Clubs who fail to rise to the occasion would be left behind as only the best would be allow to be part of the highest level of cricket in Berbice.
Foster stated that some Clubs are unable to win one match at the junior or Second Division level but still playing at the highest level. Clubs with immediate effect would have to get their houses in order and the Berbice Cricket Board President unveiled a series of Rules that has been followed with immediate effect. These include submission of a First Division list with a minimum of twenty names, the naming of a Cricket
Coach for the Team, while Clubs would also be required to have a functioning Executive body. Other requirements include uniforms for the entire team, regular practice sessions, while every First Division Team apart from the Police Club, would be required to have a youth development programme in place.
After discussions with the teams it was also agreed that walkovers shall be granted half hour after the scheduled start of play, that teams who arrive after the scheduled start of play shall forfeit the toss, while teams shall be fined for deliberately wetting the pitch to delay the start of play. Foster also announced that in 2019, the Berbice Cricket Board would most likely put a system into place to demote teams who perform poorly or below the require standard.
Representatives of all the Clubs present committed themselves to placing emphasis on lifting the standard of the First Division level. Foster expressed disappointment that no representative from Young Warriors Cricket Club was present, despite the Club being informed numerous times. The Club also did not turn up to receive a donation of cricket balls earlier in the day from the Berbice Cricket Board.
The Board handed over twelve First Division Caps to each of the teams to be used for the Ansa Mcal SKYY Vodka 20/20 Tournament and the rest of the 2018 Season. The Berbice Cricket Board also handed over a quantity of Polo T/Shirts and broad rim hats to the Berbice Cricket Umpires Association. President of the Berbice Cricket Umpires Association Joseph Simon expressed gratitude to the Berbice Cricket Board for the timely assistance.
