victim’s cashGunwattie Sirpaul and Totaram Sadeek are still waiting to get justice after they were beaten and robbed at their 13th Street Diamond, East Bank Demerara, home on May 13.
The couple’s horror started around 01:30hrs on Sunday May 13, when bandits gained entry to their house through a kitchen window and made their way upstairs where they kicked down the couple’s bedroom door.
A fight ensued between Sadeek and one of the bandits, while Sirpaul hid at the side of the bed. The bandits who were armed with hand guns eventually overpowered the couple and tied them up.
Sirpaul said, they beat them and demanded money, of which they handed over $300,000, the bandits then demanded more, which they did not have. All the while, they were threatened with death.
The bandits took two cell phones, a quantity of jewellery, and a number of household items. As if that was not enough, they took Sirpaul’s bank card and demanded the pin from her. The demand was accompanied by a threat to kill her. She complied.
All the stuff they stole was then loaded up in the couple’s Toyota motorcar, which they also stole. Sirpaul hands and feet were bound with a phone cord while her mouth was gagged with a pillowcase while Sadeek was tied at his arms and legs with plastic straps and also gagged with pillowcase.
The whole ordeal lasted around two and a half hours, then the bandits finally left. Sadeek was the first to untie himself, after which he untied Sirpaul. They then used the landline downstairs to call the Grove Police Station. Ranks arrived about 10 minutes after.
The problems had only just begun. While the investigation was in progress, the couple got the feeling from the police that they didn’t believe their story, after a CID rank asked how Sadeek got off the plastic straps, since that was close to impossible to do.
The rank also told the couple that someone in the other street only recently faked a robbery. The couple’s car was found three days later at the back of the South Ruimveldt area, with some parts missing.
What is bothering the couple is that the bandits went to the Vreed-en-Hoop Republic Bank ATM and withdrew money from their account the same day of the robbery, which was captured on camera at 14:49 hours.
They also went to an ATM in Linden and the police have been unable to follow-up on any of the evidence that they had so far received. The couple said that the police seem to be dragging their feet in this case, since there has been two changing of ranks investigating this matter in under a month. Now there is little or no information coming out of the third rank on this matter.
The couple is also contending the condition of the area contributes to a safe haven for criminals, since the bushes to the two sides of their home are so high, if people robbing you, people can’t even know what’s going on with them.
