The police in B Division led by Commander Assistant Commissioner Lyndon Aves and Deputy Commander Superintendent Wayne DeHearte are continuing their community outreach. The latest areas of focus are visits and lectures to schools throughout the division.
Over the years the Police have been changing the scope of their work as their workload and responsibilities increase.
They have been doing things differently in an effort to tackle the many social ills that have been plaguing the society.
The police have realized that although they cannot go it alone, they reasoned, that tackling the school population would go a far way in alleviating the many problems.
Mr. DeHearte stated that they were approached by the Child Protection Agency to assist and the Police High Command readily agreed.
A number of topics have been covered including substance (narcotics) abuse, school drop outs and sexual abuse among others.
It was emphasized to the students the importance of staying in school and acquiring an education. They were advised to report any attempts of drugs and sexual abuse on themselves, family and friends and even on strangers. The students were also told that not only girls are sexually abused, but boys too can also be affected.
Lectures were done with power point presentations, demonstrations and other illustrations.
They began in May and have been conducted by Superintendent W. DeHearte, woman sergeant Blair, Corporal Bacchus and Constable Smith.
Schools visited so far are Belladrum Secondary, No 8 Secondary, Berbice High School, Berbice Educational Institute, Vryman’s Erven Secondary, Tagore Memorial, Skeldon Line Path Secondary and Skeldon High.
More than 1500 students have participated in the sessions so far.
