Rain yesterday forced the postponement of the 2018 Linden Regional Under-19 basketball champions which has been rescheduled to this afternoon where the Linden Technical Institute, having played unbeaten so far, face the challenge of Mackenzie High School who they defeated in the earlier rounds, at 16:00hrs in the final of the Linden Amateur Basketball Association/ Youth Basketball Guyana/ Powerade Linden Regional Schools Under-19 championship at the Mackenzie Sports Club hard court.
To reach the final Mackenzie High first turned back the challenge of New Silvercity Secondary disposing them 107-31 behind Leon Benjamin’s 28 game high points as Yannick Tappin and Shemar Henry had 20 points apiece and Kareem Roberts contributed 19 points. A usual Kobe Tappin led the scoring for New Silvercity Secondary with 13 points.
Linden Technical Institute then dispatched Wisburg Secondary 82-51 showing their depth as Jamal Gilkes continued his great scoring with 22 points, Raynaldo Patoir 18, Stephon Duncan 12, Daniel Lee had 12 and Shamar Chapman chipped in with 10. The Wisburg scoring was led by Jonathan Copeland with 23 points, while Odlyn Baird and Keyon Davidson each netted eight points.
Having won their last meeting in this tournament 67-51, Linden Technical Institute are favoured to win but many feel that Mackenzie s High are in with a chance of taking the top honours this time around.
The Mackenzie High School, however, should be able to compete at this level as their only loss was against the Linden Technical Institute. Leon Benjamin has been their mainstay with 110 points for an avareage of 22 per game, while Yannick Tappin remains among the best players in this stage category having scored 87 points so far for an average of 17 per game, while Kareem Roberts, who has been a bit inconsistent, could must come good in they are to stop this Linden Technical Institute. Roberts has scored 55 points so far and is averaging 11 points per game.
Linden Technical Institute’s Jamal Gilkes is the outstanding scorer in this championship having amassed 140 points, while missing the game against Wisburg for an average of 28 points per game, his teammates have also been in good scoring form and make them team that is on a high. He has Daniel Lee has 103 points for an average of 17 points per game and Raynaldo Patoir with 85 has scored 14 points per game, while Stephon Duncan and Shamar Chapman are also players to watch.
This final will be preceded by the third place game between Wisburg Secondary and New Silvercity Secondary Schools which starts vat 14.00hrs.
When New Silvercity Secondary faced the Wisburg Secondary in the round robin format earlier in this tournament they won 40 -37 and this game should be a close encounter. Wisburg’s top player Jonathan Copeland is averaging 16 points per game having scored 98 points up to this stage and Odlyn Davidson has 41 points with an average of just under seven points per game.
New Silvercity Secondary’s Kobe Tappin has 103 points for an average of 17 per game, while David Johnson had 37 points, averaging six points per game.
