Despite objections by Police Prosecutor Sanj Singh, Senior Magistrate Leron Daly, yesterday granted bail to the tune of $100,000 to a nanny who allegedly burnt the hands of a six-year-old boy who was left in her care.
The woman, 43-year-old Nicole Rosemay of 31 Bent Street, Werk-en-rust, appeared in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
The allegation against Rosemay stated that between June 1 and June 14 at the aforementioned address, she unlawfully and maliciously inflicted grievous bodily harm on a six-year-old boy.
She denied the allegation after it was read to her by the Magistrate.
The court heard that the child had been in the care of the defendant for the past 18 months.
The prosecutor added that at the time of the incident, the child was at home with the woman when she allegedly plugged in an iron and pressed it against both hands of the child.
It was reported that while the child was in class, the injuries were observed by a teacher, who then took the child to the Childcare and Protection Agency (CCPA).
The matter was then reported, and an investigation was carried out. Rosemay was arrested and charged for the offence.
Prosecutor Singh strongly objected to bail being granted to the defendant citing the serious nature of the offence and the penalty the charge attracts. He added that the woman was hired to take care of the child and not to abuse him.
The court heard that when the woman was arrested, she admitted in a caution statement to the offence and for that reason she should be remanded.
The Magistrate was also told by the investigating rank that the child is in the care of the CCPA.
Attorney-at-Law Tiffany Jeffrey asked that her client be released on reasonable bail. She added that the child was in a room playing with the iron and her client was merely trying to take the iron away from him when he was accidently burnt.
The lawyer went on to tell the court that her client was the one that treated the child for his injuries.
She added that the teacher observed the child’s injuries at the healing stage.
Magistrate Daly, after listening to the prosecutor’s submission, granted bail to the defendant. The woman was ordered to lodge her passport with the court and refrain from making contact with the victim.
She was also ordered to report every Monday at the Alberttown Police Station until the completion of the trial. She will make her next court appearance on July 20.
