Grenada’s 400M Olympics and World Championships Gold Medallist 25-year-old Kirani James and USA born Guyanese 2018 Commonwealth Games Triple Jump Gold Medallist Troy Doris will headline a field of 100 athletes representing 25 Countries when the third Edition of the Aliann Pompey Invitational gets underway next Saturday at the Leonora Stadium.
The 40-year-old Pompey was the last Guyanese before Doris to win a Commonwealth Gold which she did in 2002 in England, informed that the 2018 Championships will have 17 Events and will commence at 15:00hrs.
According to Pompey who represented Guyana in four Olympics (2000, 2004, 2008 and 2012) and participated five times at the World Championships, James’ participation very big for a locally held event since is one of the top ranked Athletes in the world.
”We have several new Countries including Cuba, Columbia, Haiti, Martinique, Nigeria and Porto Rico coming for this event and I am very grateful for the Support from the Sponsors” Pompey said.
General Admission is $1,000 while for the VIP section cost $5,000 with the feature event being the 400m race and in addition to those Countries mentioned, athletes from the USA, Canada, Barbados, Trinidad and Tobago, St Lucia and Jamaica will battle for supremacy in what promises to be a riveting contest on the track with lots of entertainment for what could be capacity crowd of 3,000 fans.
The GOA, NSC, Banks DIH, Fly Jamaica, Star Party Rentals, E-Networks and Sleep Inn Hotel and Casino are among the main sponsors. (Sean Devers)
