An East Bank Essequibo couple, yesterday, pointed out two neighbours whom they claim carried out last Tuesday’s rape/robbery in their home.
The suspects were picked out during an identification parade. Police have sought legal advice on the matter and a decision is likely to be known today.
But police are reportedly puzzled about certain aspects of the case.
They are said to be baffled about the failure of the intruders to cover their faces, since they would have been easily identified.
An official also confirmed that the alleged victims claimed that the robbers attempted to take them from the scene in their own car. However, the victims said that the robbers were forced to flee after the vehicle broke down.
According to reports, the three robbers escaped with $12,000 and a gold ring after beating the husband and sexually assaulting his spouse in the couple’s home.
Police said the attack occurred around 2:30 hrs on Tuesday.
It is alleged that the intruders struck the sleeping husband to the head. They then demanded money, and the man handed over $12,000 and a ring.
“During the ordeal, the husband was struck to the head and his spouse was allegedly sexually assaulted,” police said.
“It was further alleged that the suspects placed the victims into their (victims’) vehicle and drove away but the vehicle reportedly broke down and the perpetrators escaped.”
The victims were medically examined, treated and sent away.
Based on investigation gathered, investigators arrested two men who reside in the same community.
