A 28-year-old mother of four is dead after being stabbed by her former common law partner, a farmer of Limlair Village, Corentyne, Berbice.
Dead is Tovonie Alexce Simmons, of Lot 10 Second Street, Limlair, Berbice. Her former partner who is currently hospitalized at the Port Mourant Hospital after he committed the brazen act has been identified as Imran Lyte, called ‘Jabbar’, 30, also from Limlair. He attempted suicide.
Reports from the police are that shortly before midnight Simmons was at home with her mother Jacquelyn Henry, 55, a vendor, when Lyte arrived to discuss an issue that had occurred on Sunday, between he and his ex brother-in-law.
It was during the discussion about the issue that an argument erupted between Lyte and Simmons, who reportedly whipped out a knife from his left side pants waist and dealt several stabs to the mother of four.
In her bid to escape, she ran towards the verandah and plunged over. She managed to get up from the fall and at that point began running again. The suspect ran after her and slit her throat.
He subsequently escaped in an easterly direction towards the backlands.
Simmons was picked up and rushed to the New Amsterdam Hospital where she was pronounced dead on arrival.
At the home, neighbours, relatives and friends were gathered as the news circulated that yet another woman was murdered at the hands of a man that she once shared a relationship with, the father of her children.
The blood soaked clothing was tucked away in a bucket while the detective was gathering information from the mother of the deceased young woman.
Simmons’s devastated mother explained that Lyte’s sister brought him to their home around 20:30 hrs to resolve an issue that took place on Sunday.
“They (Simmons and Lyte) come and they talk over their business and they were sitting on the table and me and Rhonda (the suspect’s sister) were sitting here in the living room. Couple minutes after, he grab she and she scream. When me look, she try fuh jump on top of me, from the chair, suh me try fuh block he and he fire at me.
“She run and go pon the verandah and me run behind she and me tek a chair and brace he (Lyte) and then she jump over the verandah and we tell she ‘run, run’,” Henry detailed.
According to her, Lyte managed to free himself from her and ran after her daughter who was already on the street, some distance away, “and he ketch she and slit she throat and get away.”
The 55-year-old woman disclosed that Lyte left her daughter and their four children sometime in December to live with another woman, a neighbour.
This she said was one of the major problems that sparked arguments between the deceased and the suspect.
“He moved on with he life and still when my daughter walk on the road, he does molest she. One time he come, break up she phone. He accused she friend dem of threatening he girl (lover), and he seh how it does affect he lover,” she said.
Henry told reporters that her daughter made several reports at the Whim Police Station after Lyte continuously threatened her.
“Plenty time, she mek report and dem send police. When dem come, dem ask if Imran there people telling dem he inside the house and dem police ain’t going in”.
It was also understood that Simmons had requested help from the police to secure a restraining order against Lyte after she had an encounter with him. He reportedly attacked her once before but she screamed for help and eventually escaped. A report was also made about the incident.
Lyte also attacked the dead woman’s brother while he was riding home on Sunday. He dealt the young man several stabs about his body but was never arrested.
Some relatives and residents stated that when previous reports were made, “so much police don’t come, but look how much deh hay now!”
The deceased received 12 wounds, one to the neck , two to her left breast, three to the back , one to the left hip, one to the left forearm, right chest and chin. The murder weapon has not yet been recovered and the suspect is stable at the Port Mourant Hospital.
