The Berbice Cricket Board (BCB) on Saturday last, honoured 71 year-old Carlton Sinclair as its 2018 Father of the Year under its Tribute to Heroes Programme. The event was organised by the Special Events Committee headed by Executive Member Angela Haniff and sponsored by the Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club, MS.
Carlton Sinclair is the grandfather of Berbice Under-19 Captain and National Junior player, Kevin Sinclair who has represented Berbice and Guyana at the Under-15, 17 and 19 levels and recently led Berbice to the Guyana Cricket Board U-19 double championship by winning the respective Inter County tournaments.
The elder Sinclair has been looking after his talented grandson for over seven years and has served as his role model, mentor and even cricket coach and has seen encouraging rewards with the young Sinclair improving his batting and offspin.
Sinclair, for years also worked with the Police Cricket Club as a Coach and has assisted dozens of youths who have gone on to play First Division Cricket in Berbice and also for Berbice and Guyana.
Carlton Sinclair, who is employed as a Security guard stated that he was delighted to be honoured by the Berbice Cricket Board. He stated that the Board is once again, a highly respected organisation and as such he felt quite honoured.
BCB President Hilbert Foster stated that while their main objective is to develop Berbice cricket on the field, it is also important to recognise the contribution of every single stakeholder including parents who looked after players.
He hailed Carlton Sinclair as a true hero of Berbice cricket as he has guided the career of not only his grandson, but others. Noting that Kevin is a hardworking, disciplined and focused youth cricketer, he urged other parents to follow in the 2018 BCB Father of the Year Awardee, footsteps.
Foster stated that parents are a child’s best role model and as such they must lead by example. He urged parents to be their children best friends and also to instill in their children the importance of hard work, discipline, education and having a relationship with God.
The BCB, under his leadership would continue to invest in social programmes to make a positive difference. Special Events Committee Chairperson Angela Haniff congratulated Sinclair on his award and expressed thanks to the Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club (RHTY&SC) for sponsoring the programme.
The RHTY&SC, since February 2018, has invested over $1M of its own funds to assist Berbice cricket. The club had also sponsored BCB Mother of the Year Award during the month of May.
