A woman is now fearful for her life after her ex-husband of 28 years attempted to kill her at her home yesterday in Babu Jaan, Port Mourant.
He later set her home on fire and escaped.
Injured is Omawattie Alvin, 47, and her seven-month pregnant 17-year-old daughter, Leana Thomas, of 192 Area R Babu Jaan, Port Mourant, Berbice. The suspect has been identified as Lionel Thomas, 62, of Rose Hall Town.
According to reports, Thomas, who was expected to appear in court yesterday for a matter involving Alvin and him, was released by the Rose Hall Outpost Wednesday.
Upon his release, he ventured to Alvin’s home and began arguing with her.
He subsequently grabbed her and the two ended up in a scuffle when Thomas pulled out a knife and attempted to stab her.
Alvin’s daughter who was in the upper flat of the two-storeyed building heard the commotion downstairs and retreated. In an attempt to save her mother, she intervened but was hit in the head with a champagne bottle by her father.
The two managed to escape from the suspect and he subsequently ran into the nearby bushes.
A fearful Omawattie relayed that Thomas and her separated in 2016 but since then he continuously harassed and made threats towards her.
The cause of their separation, she said, was due to his violent behaviour towards her during their domestic disputes.
According to her, Thomas was scheduled to appear in court yesterday on another matter for attacking her a week ago at the Port Mourant Market.
“Me went and give statement yesterday (Wednesday) and when I was coming home around 6:30 time, place bin li’l dark so I go home and went in the kitchen downstairs when I hear footsteps”.
She said she paid it no mind since she thought it was her daughter but then she heard a voice shout, “Which side you ah come from? Every time you mek me get lock up; me gon kill you today”.
Alvin said the man grabbed her and they both ended up in a scuffle, when her daughter ran downstairs and held on to her father.
“He pull out the knife and bore me on me belly and me daughter hold on, and the knife cut she finger. It had a bicycle bar here and he tek it and lash me in my head and then he tek a champagne bottle and go fuh lash me but me daughter throw sheself and it lash she instead,” the woman explained.
Alvin disclosed that he attempted to slit her throat with the knife but both her and her daughter escaped while he ran to the nearby bushes.
The woman revealed that she subsequently made a report on the said day of the attack and was advised by the police not to return home.
Alvin disclosed that she retreated to a close relative’s house and shortly after she received a call that her house was on fire.
When she arrived at the scene Wednesday night, the house was already engulfed in flames and nothing could be saved. She is suspecting that Thomas set the house ablaze.
“Right now I am looking for somewhere to hide until the police find he. His intention is to kill me. Every time I take him to court, he breaking the bond or he getting release,” she stressed.
The woman and her pregnant daughter are nursing several injuries.
Police are hunting for the suspect.
