Dear Editor,
An appeal was made to President David Granger to help free our communities of Paradise /Bachelors Adventure and Melanie Damishana on the East Coast of Demerara. The Lands and Surveys Commission was invited to check on this indiscretion that is an affront to the Development of our communities.
At Melanie Damishana the former Cinema Compound is over run with scrap metal which was encouraged by the previous administration. Likewise on Paradise Factory Road where the former rice mill was sited is now a huge dumpsite for scrap metal. This is ancestral land that must be returned to the people of these communities.
It is reported that telephone cables are destroyed in this community to get the wires to be sold as scrap metal, bringing great discomfort to the GTT customers of the community. The Paradise Factory road is a mess with the trucks and large containers traversing the roadway to get to the site.
The neighbourhood is complaining of an increase of rats in the communities due to this ever growing dumpsite.
The Former President Forbes Burnham worked with the people to establish the Cinema at Melanie Damishana and the Rice mill for the paddy produced by the Bachelor’s Adventure Paradise Cooperative Society. Today these sites no longer benefit residents.
We call on the Government to bring an end to this state of affairs that undermines community development, the scrap metal dealers should be sanctioned to remove the scrap and cease bringing the garbage to our community.
Our last activity was a cultural show with Natural Black at the Paradise dumpsite. These dealers are only concerned with filling their pockets, but damn the community.
We call on the administration to put an end to dumping of scrap metal in the communities mentioned.
The dream of Linden Forbes Sampson Burnham was to see the communities as cooperative villages with the Cooperative Bank, Post office, NIS office and a shopping plaza established at Melanie Damishana.
The members of the Melanie Damishana Coop Society should all resign since they have authorized the dumping of this scrap metal for a few pieces of silver at the Melanie dumpsite, a shameful act.
Yours Respectfully
RAS Aaron Blackman.
