The Grandmaster Monasingh Memorial Tournament was held recently at the New Amsterdam Town Hall which was hosted the White Tiger Martial Arts Academy. This was done to commemorate the life of the late Michael Stephen Monasingh who passed away in April 2017. Ms. Stephanie Monasingh, was elated to support this tournament and was there to share with those present some fond memories of her dad. The White Tiger Martial Arts Academy has planned to make this Tournament an annual event.
The W.T.M.M.A extended invitations to several Martial Arts Schools in Guyana and same was accepted by Black Hawks Martial Arts Management Network Association and Best of the Best Martial Arts Motivators Association from Georgetown.
Tournament commenced with one minute silence followed by prayer and national pledge.
There were four (4) different categories namely:-
· Kicking Challenge
· Noodles Sparring (padded weapon)
· Individual and Team Forms
· Sparring
The first category for the day was the Kicking Challenge, age 6 to 8 which was dominated by the W.T.M.M.A students. Justin Grant pocketed the gold, Aiden Kirton the silver and Andrew Layne the bronze.
In the 9 to 13 age group Akil Barrington from Black Hawks took away the gold medal, while his teammate Lee Anthony Lindie won the bronze and Anthony LaRose from W.T.M.M.A got the silver.
In the 14 and up age group Black Hawks again took the gold which was won by Andre Boyce and Deonte Myles from Best of the Best won silver and Wonda Simon from Black Hawks the Bronze.
Noodles Sparring (padded weapon) Azarius Tull from Black Hawks took away the gold medal his team mate Colin Bowen won bronze and Aiden Kirton from WTMAA won the silver medal in the 5 to 8 division. In the 9 to 13 division Neron Bourne from WTMAA kept the gold medal in Berbice, while the silver and bronze went to Georgetown, silver with Akil Barrington from Black Hawks and bronze to Kimberly Baveghems from Best of the Best.
The 14 up age group; Andre Boyce fought well to win the gold medal from Blacks Hawks, silver and bronze was won by the WTMAA students, silver to Tyrese Hall and bronze to Julez Harry.
Individual Forms Category 5 to 8 saw the Black Hawks coming out on top with their free style form performance, so the gold went to Garren Newton, silver to Azarius Tull and bronze to Colin Bowen, also carrying away the gold and bronze in the 9 to 13 age group was Akil Barrington and Jonathan Griffith, silver went to Miguel Hunte from best of the best and the 14 up age group Black Hawks again took the gold and bronze Andre Boyce gold and Milessa Himraj bronze, while Adrian LaRose from WTMAA won the silver.
The team forms only first was medal 5 to 8 winners WTMAA Aiden Kirton and Andrew Layne, 9 to 13 WTMAA again retained the medals Ryan Burgess and Anthony LaRose,14 and up winners Megal Hunte and Victor Gordon from Best of the Best.
Sparring was done separately, continuous fighting (taekwondo) and Point sparring (karate) the gold medal was won by Jonathon Griffith of Black Hawks and sliver by Garren Newton in the 5 to 8category, Gold by Andre Boyce and sliver by Akil Barrington in the 9 to 13 and gold by Milessa Himraj and silver by Vonda Simon in 14 to 17.
White Tiger Martial Arts Academy, which does Taekwondo, winners are as followsin the 5 to 8 category: gold to Marcus Humphrey, silver to Aiden Kirton and bronze to Justin Grant, 9 to 13 gold to Ryan Burgess, silver to Anthony LaRose and Bronze to Jelani Lambert and 14 and up division gold Tyrese Hall, silver to Neron Bourne and bronze to Julez Harry.
