An inspector attached to the Guyana Energy Agency [GEA] is now dead, after the Toyota Land Cruiser that he was driving, slammed into a utility pole yesterday morning.
The victim has been identified as 23-year-old Shankar Ram, of 14 Mon Repos Housing Scheme, East Coast Demerara. The incident occurred sometime around 00:15 hours on the Zorg Public Road on the Essequibo Coast.
According to reports, Ram was proceeding north along the thoroughfare at a fast rate, with a female colleague in the front passenger seat of the vehicle, PJJ 1069, when he lost control and slammed into a utility pole.
According to police, Ram received serious injuries after he was flung from the vehicle at the point of impact. He was rushed to the Suddie Public Hospital in an unconscious state and was pronounced dead on arrival. The 23-year-old female passenger, who has been identified as Doneeta Ramlakan, was also rushed to the Suddie Public Hospital in an unconscious state.
She is reportedly recovering and remains in a stable condition.
Meanwhile, GEA in a statement said that Ministers David Patterson and Annette Ferguson of the Ministry of Public Infrastructure, the Chairman and members of the Board of Directors and management and staff of the Guyana Energy Agency, are deeply grieved by the passing of the inspector.
“Mr. Ram succumbed to injuries following an accident which occurred on the Essequibo Coast shortly after midnight on June 20th, 2018. At the time, Mr. Ram was driving a vehicle owned by the GEA. His fellow colleague Ms. Doneeta Ramlakhan sustained injuries as a result of the accident, and is currently a patient at the Suddie Public Hospital. The incident is currently being investigated by the Guyana Police Force,” GEA said.
“Mr. Ram was an employee of the Agency from June 6, 2013 to April 11, 2015 attached to the Licensing Division and then from May 15, 2017 to June 19, 2018 in the Fuel Marking Division. He leaves to mourn his wife, parents and other relatives and friends.”
