Former Guyana Defence Force (GDF) officer and treason accused Oliver Hinckson died yesterday after a prolonged period of illness. He was 74.
Hinckson, a Sandhurst-trained soldier, became a household name in the seventies, when, as a GDF Lieutenant, he made a dramatic leap from the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts and escaped in a vehicle. He had been charged with larceny.
He remained at large for several years. Wanted bulletins for Hinckson were posted at several ports around the country. He eventually surrendered but was only briefly incarcerated. He authored the still in-print novel “The Enemy Within.”
Hinckson would again make the news during the ‘crime wave’ period. His home was searched for firearms, and he was charged, under the PPP administration, with advocating a terrorist act, possession of arms and ammunition, and sedition. He was remanded, but freed in 2009.
