The Linden Amateur Basketball Association yesterday received a timely boost for its Linden Regional Under-19 Schools basketball championship from Rickland Hutson through his Leadership Academy as the semi-finals are being played this afternoon at the Mackenzie Sports Club hard court.
United States-based former national football player Rickland ‘Tallo’ Hutson has donated the Most Valuable Player Trophy after being approached for assistance as he felt it was an opportunity to give back to the development and promotion of sport in his home town.
In a statement to the association Hutson, whose mother had seen her sons play football for the Guyana National team noted: “The trophy is in memory of my mom, the late Mrs. Evelyn Hutson and it’s also on behalf of my family and my foundation ‘RICKLAND HUTSON LEADERSHIP ACADEMY.” Thanks for giving me the opportunity to contribute towards your positive influence in our youths for as long as I know you. One Love”.
‘Tallo’ Hutson, who grew up in Christianburg, Linden admired his mother’s philanthropic doings and added that “this is a chance to support an event or cause that will impact the youths from our communities in a positive way.” Rickland along with his brothers Selwyn Hutson, Renwick ‘Chief’ Hutson and Rawle ‘Taitty’ Vickery all represented Guyana at the Senior National level with the solid backing of their mother Mrs. Evelyn Hutson.
At late notice also the Regional Education Department and the Mackenzie Sports Club made provision for the tournament to be staged.
Before the tournament began Banks DIH through its Powerade brand committed to give its support and Youth Basketball Guyana also threw its support with the donation of two basketballs, a pair of nets, a cash donation and the Championship Trophy for this year’s Linden Regional Championship where the top three school teams are also guaranteed a place in this weekend’s Youth Basketball Guyana National Basketball Festival, slated for the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
Receiving the trophy at the intermission of one of the matches on the final preliminary round robin play ahead of today’s highly anticipated semifinals, was Vice President of the Linden Amateur Basketball Association Dr. Karen Perreira who thanked the Academy’s representative Jessie Marshall for the donation of the trophy and an undisclosed amount of cash towards the successful staging of the championship. Dr. Perreira said “We hope that this would not be the last venture of this organisation and we look forward to many more in the future.”
The first semi-final is set for 15.00hrs and the second at 17.30hrs, weather permitting at the Mackenzie sports Club hard court and the school teams through to the final four are Linden Technical Institute, Wisburg Secondary, Mackenzie High and the New Silvercity Secondary School.
