With the aim of developing the game in the area, the West Berbice Cricket Association (WBCA) will be hosting a two-week academy for male and female cricketers between the ages from 10-19.
The Academy will be held at Fort Wellington Secondary School and sessions will be conducted by coaches attached to the West Berbice Cricket Association (WBCA) and selected resource personnel.
The Programme will commence at 08:00hrs and conclude at 15:30hrs daily and will be divided into two sessions with lectures being done on various topics in the morning and cricketing activities in the afternoon.
Tokens will be given to the best student from the various age groups and the respective disciplines; batting, bowling, fielding and wicket-keeping, while two U13 matches are also on the cards.
President of the WBCA David Black said the objective of the programme is to encourage individuals within to become more involved in the game thereby helping them to enhance their skills, instill discipline, become more health conscious, crime awareness, foster better understanding of the rules of the game and to produce better individuals which will benefit the community.
Black added that the youths are talented but need some guidance in the various departments of the game so they can be better prepared for future tournaments.
He noted the importance of players becoming aware of the laws of cricket and stressed on the importance of discipline. Black, who served as manager of the Guyana U19 team for a number of years, indicated that the programme will be held annually and is calling on the business sector for support.
“The camp’s main focus is to reach out to the youths in the various communities that want to play cricket and are not attached to any club, we will also be reaching out to the students that just completed the kiddy tournament in the various schools and the coaches will indentify the students who will be sent to clubs.” The camp is open to youths from Ithaca to Abary bridge.
