The Berbice Cricket Board on Saturday last hosted the largest ever fast bowling clinic to be organised by a Cricket Board in Guyana. A record thirty six junior fast bowlers attended the One-day Dr. Tulsi Dyal Singh Coach Clinic at the Albion Cricket Ground. The fast bowlers drawn from across the Ancient County and were from the Under-15, Under-17, Under-19 and Under-21 levels.
Berbice Cricket Board President Hilbert Foster hailed the fast bowling clinic as a tremendous success and reflected the passion that has returned to Berbice Cricket over the last four months. Berbice Cricket Board had planned for twenty fast bowlers and was blown away with the large turnout. The fast bowling clinic was the second one hosted by the Berbice Cricket Board after a wicketkeeping clinic which was attended by twenty youths. The Board would also be organising clinics for left arm spinners, leg spinners, off spinners and batsmen. Additionally, the Berbice Cricket Board would also organise four Two-day Coaching Programmes across Berbice. To date, a total of 102 youths have attended this Programme in the Lower Corentyne and Upper Corentyne Sub-Associations. Foster, stated that the Berbice Cricket Board is taking advantage of the long rainy season to complete all of its developmental programmes. After the completion of the Dr. Tulsi Dyal Singh Coaching Programme, seventy youths between the ages of 12 to 19 years would be selected to attend the Berbice Cricket Board Academy from the 23rd to 27th July, 2018, at the Albion Cricket Ground.
A panel of Coaches with personal experiences would conduct the Cricket Academy, with the main objective of getting all Berbice Players properly prepared to represent Berbice and Guyana. Foster also disclosed that preparation for the 2019 Inter-county season at the Under-15, Under-17, Under-19 and Female levels, with the aim of winning each one of them has started. Berbice, he stated has lost Championships due to fast bowling points and this would never happen again.
Coach Winston Smith worked with the attentive young bowlers on the four principles of fast bowling including Stability and force generation. Work was also done on the bio mechanics of bowling, run-up, gather, foot landing, release and follow through. The Coach also had intense interactive work with the bowlers on hand movement, on how to bowl the off cutter, in swing, out swing and pace variations. Work was also done on the importance of physical fitness and how to achieve it. Smith disclosed that he was able to indentify at least fifteen fast bowlers with immense potential and special emphasis would be place on fast bowling for the rest of the year as the county start early preparation for the 2019 Inter-county Junior Championship. While Berbice is well known for its spinners, the Berbice Cricket Board is seeking to have at least four destructive fast bowlers for each of its Junior Teams at the Under-15, Under-17 and Under-19 levels. Among the fast bowlers attending the historic clinic were Christopher Harry, Isaiah Thorne, Kevlon Anderson, Javed Karim, Nicholas Lawson and Leon Swammy.
