An emotional 34-year-old father of four, who was recently nabbed with close to half pound of marijuana, was yesterday sentenced to four years imprisonment by a City Magistrate.
A teary-eyed, Kevin Clarke, of 135King Edward Street, Albouystown, was jailed when he appeared before Principal Magistrate Judy Latchman in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
Clarke pleaded guilty to the charge which alleged that on June 14, last, at the aforementioned address, he had in his possession 184 grams of marijuana for the purpose of trafficking.
When asked why he had the narcotics in his possession, Clarke stated, “It’s my first offence. I only did it because I recently lost my job. This was the only thing left for me to do. I did it to feed my family. I’m very sorry, please forgive me.”
Facts presented by Police Prosecutor, Arvin Moore, stated that on the day in question, ranks from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), acting on information, went to the abovementioned address.
The court heard that at the time when the search was carried out on the premises, Clarke was not at home.
Moore added that a search was then carried out in Clarke’s room and a quantity of leaves, seeds and stems suspected to be marijuana, were found concealed in a barrel in a haversack.
Moore further told the court that at the time of the search, Clarke’s stepdaughter, who was at home, told ranks that the bag belonged to him.
Clarke was later arrested and taken to Brickdam Police Station where he admitted to owning the illicit substance in a caution statement.
The Magistrate after listening to the prosecutor imposed the custodial sentence and a $30,000 fine on Clarke.
