The Guyana Rugby Football Union (GRFU) 2018 XVs season sponsored by Bounty Farm continued yesterday at the National Park rugby field with a very lopsided encounter between defending Champions Guyana Defence Force (GDF) and Pepsi Hornets.
In the GDF’s first match of the season, with the absence of star player Patrick King, they managed to thrash Hornets 33-7 to get on the right track to successfully defend their title which they won in both the 2017 and 2016 season. GDF also managed to snap up the bonus point after scoring more than the required 4 tries.
One minute after kickoff, National player, Avery Corbin registered the army men’s first try before Glenday Poole another to double the champions lead to 10 points. A successful conversion kick from Joseph Rahaman ensured GDF finished the first half of play comfortably with 12 points.
GDF full quota of 15 players had outnumbered the tardy Hornets that only had 12, and the lack in numbers further added to the mountain Hornets had to climb when adding the physical advantage of the Defence Force team.
Immediately on resumption for the second period of 40 minutes play, Hornets Toby David scored a try and Leon Greaves converted to bring the losing side back into the game with the score 12-7.
But, Corbin scored two more tries to complete his hat-trick, while Dwayne Schroeder assisted the 33-7 rout with one of his own; all of which were successfully converted by Rahaman who finished the match with eight points.
On Saturday afternoon, Delmar Headley had recorded a hat-trick of tries to help Panthers maul Yamaha Caribs 41-11 in the game which the winners led throughout. Panthers were boosted with the return of Rondel ‘Bull’ McArthur who had suffered a minor concussion last month. (Story and photos by Calvin Chapman)
