The Lethem town Council is warning especially residents of the Lethem Municipality of the rising waters in the main creeks and rivers passing through the municipality.
“…We have been monitoring the situation and visiting the affected areas to assess the water levels and also to determine if households are affected.
“Furthermore we are currently in the process of convening a meeting with councillors and also stakeholders in order to have speedy sourcing of resources in case there is a flood or damages that need to be fixed with urgency. We would appreciate if residents can update us also,” the council said in a statement.
The council also warned that parents should keep children away from the rising waters to avoid accidents and water-borne diseases as garbage is mixing with the waterways.
“If you must go swimming please do so in a clear area and monitor your children closely. However we do not recommend that you do so presently for your own safety.”
The country is facing significant rainfall at the moment.
Lethem is the town that borders Brazil and is linked to the neighbouring country via the Takutu Bridge.
