Residents of Hauraruni community, located along the Soesdyke/Linden highway, are appealing for help with its access road after a huge blaze damaged the multi-complex building.
A fire tender was unable to enter the area Tuesday morning because of the condition of the road.
The fire destroyed the complex leaving $12M in losses. In addition to the building, the items lost included over 1,000 mattresses, 300 pieces of plyboards, four beds and a stage. Almost half of the roof was gone too.
The building is used for church meetings, Leaders Retreat, Youth Camps and a bible school.
The community in a letter published in Kaieteur News on Friday said that men and women, boys and girls rushed from their homes with buckets in an effort to quell the flames.
They were able to save about 60 percent of the building.
The residents claimed that what was even more heartrending was after the Guyana Fire Service – located approximately 20 minutes away from the location –came, the tender was unable to reach the location because of the condition of the access road leading from the Linden Highway.
“Questions were raised among community members as it relates to why they are being denied by the Government of Guyana to grant their request which was made via letters and meetings with government officials after being established as a community over 30 years.”
According to the residents, for too long they have been witnessing other communities less populated having proper access roads.
“To the Minister and Ministry of Public Infrastructure, we would like to inform you that we have not been a violent people who protest. Thus, we are calling on you this day to open your ears and listen to us, and open your eyes and look at us, for the time has come when we should be denied no more, and our plea should be granted for a proper access road as citizens of this country.”
The residents said that given the fact that the community comprises an all-age school, a girls’ home, a health centre and a Missionary Training Centre, it clearly shows that it is a community preparing its people for a better Guyana.
