Dear Editor,
There was a time in this country, when uncertainty was the word of the day. I hope those times have not since been forgotten, the uncertainty of whether you will live, die or be robbed.
Those times were well known by Bharrat Jagdeo. He presided over this nation during an unprecedented crime wave in Guyana; one that drove fear in the hearts of Guyanese, of all walks of life, for a number of years; one that still haunts the people of this country, with memories of the massacres.
What and who was responsible for this plague that was let loose on the people of this country has still not been answered, by two sides of a coin, who both claim to know the genesis of the turmoil that Guyanese went through in the beginning of the 2000’s.
This time was not a peaceful one. “No peace” – if you were to use those words to me, with the intentions of me getting a message, where in history in my memory would you want me to go?
Which brings me to what I really want to ask, what did Bharrat Jagdeo mean when he said, “There will be consequences, if they think that they can rig the elections and have the kind of peace that we have now, they are wrong, very very wrong.
I hope they are not thinking that in their calculation, I am making it clear about that, and that’s not coded language. It’s not coded, because then the nature of the struggle, will be different, we will be struggling against an illegal, illegitimate Government. That is not in power through the ballot, and it would be a different form of struggle, totally different.”
This said by a man who should know exactly what those words meant. Should we think that there was another meaning to words that were clearly said, and reasserted by saying,” I am making it clear about that and that’s not coded language”, or is it a case that the literacy level of Guyanese is so low, only Government officials can decode this message? And if so, have they got the message?
Will there be the rising of a new ‘freedom fight’ in Guyana? Who will be the Rebel Leader? Who will risk their lives to create an atmosphere of instability in this country? What does a country devoid of peace, look like, can you remember?
Yes, I think Jagdeo remembers…
The economic instability at present is evident, and might be partially as a result of monkey wrenches been thrown in the works, but more likely as a result of the Government’s lack of vision. What is clear is this; it’s hard times for all, but we live with less fear, except for those created for us from time to time, by the existing propaganda mechanisms.
This attempt by Bharrat Jagdeo to create an uncertain atmosphere in this struggling country, must be questioned, lest the multitude misunderstand and get embroiled in unrest they themselves care not for. There is a struggle now; there will be a struggle always, it’s what Democracy is hinged upon, the ability to speak freely, and guide your elected leaders in the right direction.
Go now, Mr Bharrat Jagdeo, and struggle with the sugar workers in Berbice. Now is the time; not when the time suits you in 2020; not when you want to whip up a make-believe struggle to support you in your quest for a third term.
Yours Faithfully,
Guyanese Critic
